Role Purpose:

Plan International is seeking an experienced, values driven and strategic leader to serve as Country Director for Nepal. This is a pivotal leadership role, responsible for setting the overall direction of Plan International’s work in Nepal and ensuring high?quality programme delivery, strong influencing impact, and sustainable organisational performance.

As Country Director, you will lead a diverse team of approximately 130 staff and oversee a country programme with an annual budget of around €10 million. You will represent Plan International at the highest levels with government, donors, civil society, media and partners, while ensuring the organisation delivers tangible, gender transformative impact for the most vulnerable children, especially girls.

This role requires a leader who is comfortable driving organisational transformation, strengthening culture and accountability, and positioning Plan International Nepal as a credible, influential and effective development and humanitarian actors.

Dimensions of the Role:

  • Provide leadership to the Nepal Country Office in delivering quality programmes (grants and sponsorship). Current budgets of around €10 million per year
  • Ensure Plan International’s program reaches areas of greatest need in the country and develop advocacy work and acquisition of grants to support Plan’s work for promoting the rights of children in Nepal and equality for girls in Nepal.
  • Provide key leadership in influencing policies, practices and social norms that affect the lives of children, particularly girls.
  • Provide leadership in resource mobilization, encompassing bilateral, multilateral donors, as well as funding from corporate and other sources such as social impact investment funds and payment by results contracts
  • Leadership, management and development of Plan International Nepal team comprising of around 130 Staff
  • Leadership and management of organizational change with a focus on building and maintaining positive employee relations and inculcating of Plan International’s global values and behaviours.
  • The post is responsible for all work that takes place for Plan International in Nepal including responsibility for the delivery of high-quality programs and as Plan International’s in-country representative to government and other partners including donors and communities with whom Plan works.
  • Support in the implementation of Plan’s Global Purpose and Global Strategy 2023-2027..
  • As a member of the Regional Leadership Team, the Country Director of Plan International in Nepal is expected to contribute to the strategic development and delivery of international programming, in both humanitarian and development contexts, in line with the Plan International mandate, global strategy and purpose and value.

Technical expertise, skills and knowledge:

  • Relevant Masters degree or more in in development, social science, business administration or related field.
  • Proven experience of at least 5 years, exercising leadership functions with increasing responsibility in an international environment related to development.
  • Proven understanding of “child rights” and “gender in development” concepts and the promotion of girls’ rights in the context of relevant International Conventions (Convention of the Rights of the Child, Convention for the Eradication of Discrimination against Women) and the Global Goals (SDGs).
  • Proven networking and negotiation skills with governmental and non-governmental actors.
  • Proven skills in resource mobilisation, particularly in resource poor environments – in both the humanitarian and the development sector.
  • Experience and understanding of the concepts of sustainable community development and participatory approaches and practice in development interventions.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of donor compliance and financial management.
  • Knowledge of programming in challenging environments with good understanding and appreciation of the historical, security context, political environment, economic, social/religious, cultural and humanitarian context in Nepal.
  • Proven skills in the development and management of effective and motivated teams, including distance management.
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong diplomatic and communication skills, including through mass-media in order to influence decision-makers and key stakeholders.
